Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS)

CEOS Graphic - blue - resized The West Virginia Community Educational Outreach Service (WVCEOS) has a strong tradition of education, service, and community development, dating back to 1914. Originally known as the Farm Women’s Club, the primary purpose of today’s CEOS is to strengthen individuals, families, and communities vi a continuing education, leadership development, and community involvement.

Community Educational Outreach Service Volunteers in Hancock County

The Newview CEOS had a good year! Our volunteers logged 7,000 hours of service, each of which equates to over $21 per hour in “in kind” contributions to West Virginia University—a total of $147,000!

Pictured left to right are: Back row – Laura Greathouse (2,000 hours), Louann Huff (1,000), and Norma Lawton (500). Front row -Bonnie Ryan (1,000 hours), Pat Ryan (500), and Janet Keller (1,000 hours). Not pictured – Liane Freeman (1,000 hours). All received certificates recognizing them for their hours of service.

The club held their first ever Crafters Ideas Tea at the Senior Center in May. Also, this year, plans were made to host the WVCEOS state meeting in 2016 and ways of raising money to cover the cost of the event were discussed. Janet Keller’s beautiful crocheted ribbon necklaces are being sold at the New Cumberland Candle Shop and Janet is donating the proceeds to the meeting fund.

At the December meeting, projects for the upcoming year were discussed. One new project is the “adoption” of a home for young girls in need of a place to stay when removed from their family homes due to domestic violence issues. Sometimes the girls bring very little with them in the way of personal items that are theirs alone. The Newview volunteers hope to change that by giving something useful (and cute!) to each of the girls every month, something that is just for them and, hopefully, offer encouragement until the time they can be reunited with their families.

The Newview CEOS meet at 11:00 on the first Thursday of each month at the Hancock County Senior Center, and the public is always welcome. Why not stop by? See what we’re all about – you may even find yourself wanting to join!
